“Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.” John 3:5
“Ordinances and covenants [of the temple] become our credentials for admission into [God’s] presence. To worthily receive them is the quest of a lifetime; to keep them thereafter is the challenge of mortality” (Boyd K. Packer, “Covenants,” Ensign, May 1987).
Temple ordinances include the endowment and sealing.
After receiving the ordinances of baptism and confirmation for themselves, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints go to the temple to receive those ordinances as proxies for their deceased ancestors. They do the same with respect to temple ordinances. Ordinances performed on behalf of our deceased ancestors are known as proxy ordinances.
